What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Congrats, you’re engaged! Now one of the first things on the agenda is planning your perfect engagement session!

Engagement sessions are a wonderful opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera prior to your big day! Many of my couples also opt to use their photos for save-the-dates, wedding decor, and as art for their homes.

Below are 5 tips to help you plan the perfect outfits for timeless photos that you’ll cherish forever!

  1. Colors and Clothing Style. The color tones that help achieve my “light and airy” style of photography are neutrals and pastels. Try to avoid bright reds and harsh pinks, as these tend to distract the eye. Also, say no to tiny patterns and clothing with logos and words. Dresses with flowy fabric that allow movement will add romance to your photos and are always a win in my book!

  2. What’s Your Wedding Day Vibe? It’s important for your engagement photos to set the tone for who you are as a couple and complement your wedding day vibe! Are you an adventurous pair who loves to hike? Consider going for a more outdoorsy, casual vibe. Do your date nights consist of getting dressed up and enjoying a night on the town? A fancy dress and suit would be perfect! No matter what, choose outfits that feel like “you.” If you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will automatically make you more confident in front of the camera!

  3. Location, location, location. Choose outfits that make sense with your surroundings! Are you taking photos in a botanical garden? A floral dress for her and a nice button down for him would be perfect. If your photos are in the country, high heels and a tux might not do justice to the vive you’re going for. You get the idea!

  4. Coordination is Key! I always tell my couples to coordinate without being too “matchy matchy.” Choose a palette of about 4 colors and go from there! Add patterns and textures for visual interest. If you’re needing some ideas, click here to take a peek at my Pinterest board for inspiration!

  5. Where to Shop. My favorite online shops for sessions are Piper and Scoot, Lulus, and Show Me Your Mumu!
